Sailor Moon Crystal takes place in a modern city of Tokyo in 20th century.

Usagi Tsukino is a 14 year old girl and she is in second- year middle school who. Even though it’s just a remake, she is as clumsy as ever. One day, she encounters a black cat with crescent shape scar named Luna who changes her life forever. Usagi is chosen to be a guardian of justice and is given a  broach with power to change Usagi into Sailor Moon. With this new power, Usagi has to find her friends , other guardians of justice, defeat villains and save princess.

First Impression

If you were like me who grew up watching Sailor moon in 90s, you most likely couldn’t wait for the remake of Sailor Moon which is Sailor Moon Crystal. That nostalgia feeling is just too strong. Obviously comparing Sailor Moon back then and Sailor Moon Crystal is kinda unfair because back then there’s no HD quality on anime series. Animation wise, Sailor Moon Crystal is clearly a couple decades ahead of Sailor Moon, thus, when you watch Sailor Moon Crystal, it’s better that you forget the original, stop comparing the two and enjoy Sailor Moon Crystal for what it is. If you still want to compare the two, this post should save you some time.

OP and ED songs are sung by Momoiro Clover Z. Both songs are decent but they are hardly my top picks of OP and ED from this summer anime season 2014 and I do enjoy the original OP of Sailor Moon more. It’s just a good old classic.

As far as seiyuus go, Usagi Tsukino is voiced by the same seiyuu, Kotono Mitsuishi, as the original Sailor Moon. She is an experienced seiyuu who has voiced many main characters for past 10 to 15 years. Her other big roles were Misato Katsuragi in Evangelion, Excel in Excel Saga, Mireille Bouquet in Noir and many others.

Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) is voiced HIsako Kanemoto whose voice we are familiar with as Haruka Kotoura in Kotoura-san, Haru Ichinose in Riddel story of devil and Ika Musume in Squid Girl.

Now as for Rei Hino (Sailor Mars), any Misaka Mikoto’s (re: railgun) fans should be happy to hear RIna Satou’s voice again. She also has other main role as Haruka Minami in Minami-ke and Negi Springfield in Negima.

Our lovely Sailor Jupiter or Makoto Kino is voiced by Ami Koshimizu who is another well-known seiyuu. She has voiced many main characters such as Kallen in Code Geass, Ryuuko Matoi in Kill la Kill, Yukiko Amagi in Persona 4 and of course, our lovely mahjong player in Saki, Nodoka Hanamura.

Lastly, Minako Aino or Sailor Venus is voiced by  Shizuka Itou. She has voice main characters such as Lenalee Lee in D.Gray-man, Haruka Morishima in Amagami SS and Hinagiku Katsura and Hayate the Combat Butler.

With all well known seiyuus, they are really going all out with this Sailor Moon Crystal in hoping to gain a large audience and popularity. Will they succeed ? If you have watched the first episode, what do you think ? Share your thoughts by posting in a comment below.
