With most anime spring season 2014 wrapped out their final episode last week and this week, we’re looking forward to anime season summer 2014 which will start this or next week. So what’s in your watch list? Here’s mine.

Akame ga Kill!

In a fantasy world, fighter Tatsumi sets out for the Capitol to earn money for his starving village, and finds a world of unimaginable corruption, all spreading from the depraved Prime Minister who controls the child Emperor’s ear. After nearly becoming a victim of this corruption himself, Tatsumi is recruited by Night Raid, a group of assassins dedicated to eliminating the corruption plaguing the Capitol by mercilessly killing those responsible.

This anime series based on manga with same title and it looks like it has a dark (gloomy) action fantasy type of anime. I’ve been enjoying dark theme anime recently such as selector infector wixoss which started as a typical card related anime but it got dark really quick as the story progress.

In 1972, the Apollo 17 mission discovered a hypergate to Mars on the surface of the moon. Soon, a war breaks out between Earth and Mars, and Martian soldiers begin to descend from the sky, riding steel giants, intent on exterminating humanity.

Story is about alien invasion from Mars. Martian soldiers comes from the sky, riding steel giants and intent to exterminate all human races. Action, Mecha and Sci-fi type of anime, who can say no to that ? I definitely cannot and it’s definitely in my watch list. With OP song by Kalafina, I have such a high expectation on this anime since in my opinion, well-known artists sing OP/ED = decent/good/great anime. It’s only logical, right ?

Ao Haru Ride

Yoshioka Futaba has a few reasons why she wants to “reset” her image & life as a new high school student. Because she’s cute, she was ostracized by her female friends in junior high, and because of a misunderstanding, she couldn’t get her feeling across to the one boy she has ever liked, Tanaka-kun.

Now in high school, she is determined to be as unladylike as possible so that her friends won’t be jealous of her. While living her life this way contentedly, she meets Tanaka-kun again, but he now goes under the name of Mabuchi Kou. He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger, but now things can never be the same again. Will Futaba be able to continue her love that never even started from three years ago?

Based on synopsis and trailer, story plot is pretty straight forward and it reminds me of Nisekoi in a way without multiple heroines. It looks interesting enough so I’m going to give it a try.

Bakumatsu Rock

The story is set in the Bakumatsu era, at the end of the shoguns’ rule over Japan in the middle of the 19th century. The Tokugawa shogunate uses the brainwashing Heaven’s Songs by the top idols in Shinsengumi to subjugate the country and its people. In this Japan, writing or singing any songs besides the Heaven’s Songs is a capital offense. Sakamoto Ryouma and the other rockers rise up and change the world with rock ‘n’ roll for freedom and justice.

This has a pretty interesting background of 19th century. Instead of using sword to rule over Japan, the Tokugawa uses a song to subjugate the country and its people. There’s a group of rebels or rockers rather lead by Sakamato Ryouma who tries to change the world. Replacing sword/samurai with song/rockers is an interesting mix.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal

New Sailor Moon anime commemorating the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon.

Usagi Tsukino is a second-year middle school girl who is a little clumsy and a crybaby, but she is full of energy. One day, she meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, and she transforms into Sailor Moon, a sailor-uniformed pretty guardian of love and justice! As a chosen guardian of justice, Usagi seems to have a mission to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other guardians and to protect the princess.

Meanwhile, the queen of the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl, also sends minions to the town where Usagi lives to obtain the Illusionary Silver Crystal, which has immense power. This causes strange events to unfold…

Can Sailor Moon really find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other Sailor guardians, and protect the princess…?!

For those who grew up watching Sailor Moon in the 90s, I bet you cannot wait to watch the remake of Sailor Moon series – Sailor Moon: Crystal. This series will follow its manga version very closely and of course, the animation is just that much better in comparison to the original. This is definitely in my top 3 anime for summer 2014.

DRAMAtical Murder

The story takes place many years in the future where the game “Rhyme,” a virtual fighting game, is incredibly popular and people possess “AllMates,” convenient AI computers. Aoba leads an ordinary life, working at a junk shop and living with his grandmother on the island of Midorijima. Unlike his friends, he doesn’t participate in Rhyme, nor does he belong in a gang. However, when rumors of people disappearing spread, Aoba finds himself needing to unravel the mysteries behind the island in order to protect his everyday life.

I was made aware the other day that there’s a lot of yaoi or BL stuff in the manga but I decided to put this in my watch list because the story is interesting enough and it’s SAOish in a way. I’m hoping that they will remove all the yaoi stuff from the anime, otherwise, I most likely will drop this as soon as I find any yaoi/BL material in it.

Futsuu no Joshikousei ga [Locodol] Yatte Mita

The story is about the life of a high school girl, Nanako, and her senpai, Yukari, who end up becoming the town’s local idols (locodol) upon the request of her uncle.

With Love Live second season ended recently, I somehow need my idol anime fix so this is definitely in my watch list.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

Sakura Chiyo confesses to her crush, Nozaki-kun, but he mistakes her as a fan! Unable to convey her feelings, what happens when he invites her to his house? Find out in this hilarious series!

This will be the ‘manga’ related anime for this summer 2014 season which will replace Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to from spring 2014 season which I’m really disappointed in. I do realize that I cannot expect Bakuman level of epicness but I hope this will keep me entertained through out Summer 2014 season

“On the other side of the glass, you can see tomorrow.”

The heroine is Touko Fukami, a 17-year-old born in Fukui Prefecture. Her dream is to become a glass artisan.

When I saw the trailer, I couldn’t help but feel that this anime reminds me of Nagi no Asukara and Tari Tari which were produced by P.A Works. Story plot seems to be pretty simple so I’m hoping each character’s development will keep watching this series.

Normal appearance, normal intelligence, normal in arts and sports… just normal. This is the entirely normal 14-year-old, Naru Sekiya. While she admires “Heroines” she continues to live a normal life until one moonlit night she meets a fairy. This foreign girl then guides her into the extraordinary world of the yosakoi dance.

A super normal 14-year-old girl meets with a fairy who guides her to the world of the yosakoi dance. The synopsis just cannot be more confusing, can it ? I’ll see how this anime goes.

The “dream railway paradise entertainment” story is set in a parallel world where Japan did not privatize its national railways. Naohito Takayama is an ordinary high school boy who dreams of a comfortable future working for the top-rated Japanese National Railways. He is assigned as a trainee in the Railways Security Force full of odd characters such as Sakurai, a troublemaker who hates men. On top of that, an extremist group called “RJ” plots to privatize the Japanese National Railways

This anime series is based on light novel with the same title and as the title says, it’s about japanese national railways. To be honest, I’m not expecting much from this series and hopefully, I’ll be proven wrong as time goes by.

Sword Art Online II

1 year after the SAO incident, Kirito is approached by Seijiro Kikuoka from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Department “VR Division” with a rather peculiar request.

That was an investigation on the “Death Gun” incident that occurred in the gun and steel filled VRMMO called Gun Gale Online (GGO). “Players who are shot by a mysterious avatar with a jet black gun lose their lives even in the real world…” Failing to turn down Kikuoka’s bizarre request, Kirito logs in to GGO even though he is not completely convinced that the virtual world could physically affect the real world.

Kirito wanders in an unfamiliar world in order to gain any clues about the “Death Gun.” Then, a female sniper named Sinon who owns a gigantic “Hecate II” rifle extends Kirito a helping hand. With Sinon’s help, Kirito decides to enter the “Bullet of Bullets,” a large tournament to choose the most powerful gunner within the realm of GGO, in hopes to become the target of the “Death Gun” and make direct contact with the mysterious avatar.

While others may disagree, Sword Art Online II is definite the highlight of this summer 2014 anime season. Any SAO fans like me cannot wait for this series to get started. Second season of Sword Art Online is based its light novel of Phantom Bullet arc. With theme songs performance by Eir Aoi and Luna Haruna, it’s a sign that it’s going to be great :).

Tokyo ESP

The science fantasy story Tokyo ESP begins with Rinka, an extremely poor high school girl who lives with just her father in modern Tokyo. One day, she is going home from school when she chases a “flying penguin” to the top of New Tokyo Tower—only to have “fish swimming in the air” suddenly appear before her. One of the fish goes through Rinka and gives her extraordinary powers beyond those of normal humans, particularly the ability to slip through solid objects.

Couldn’t help but to think that this feels like another mahou shoujo type of anime but nevertheless, I’m putting it in my watch list

Tokyo Ghoul

The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious “ghouls” who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.

My watch list would not be complete without some horro/dark fantasy anime. Tokyo Ghoul should be able to fill gap left by selector infector wixoss which ended couple weeks ago. Do you have this in your watch list ?
