The story takes place after 4 years of beginning of Atelier Ayesha. In order to survive the upcoming of the “Dusk End”, western people reaches of the “Land of Dusk” devoted their offers to rediscover and recreate lost alchemist technologies. Those technologies were then gathered in the alchemy city known as “Central”, where people conducted research on how to halt advance of the twilight.

In city of Colseit, local administration or government hires two new young alchemist to work for their R&D department. Marion leads the R&D department of Colseit. One of the young alchemist is called Logix “Logy” Fiscario and he came from Central. He decided to leave Central due to unfortunate circumstances and is looking forward to work as an alchemist in uncharted area surrounding Colseit. The other young alchemist who comes to work for Colseit R&D department on the same day as Logy is a girl named Escha Malier. She lives and was born Colseit.

First Impression

Atelier Escha & Logy – Alchemist of the Dusk Sky is the first Atelier series which ever be animated. Studio Gokumi is responsible for all the animation for this series. Studio Gokumi’s recent works include Saki Zenkoku-hen, Kin-iro Mosaic and The Severing Crime Edge. While Studio Gokumi does not have list of top or well-known anime series under its belt, Atelier series are known to have great character designs and beautiful background/landscape; they are very colorful.

Opening theme of Atelier Escha & Logy is called Asuiro by Rie Murakawa who is also the seiyuu of Escha Malier and ending theme is Fuyumidori by Haruka Shimotsuki. They both are relatively unknown and this is the first time that I heard both Rie Murakawa and Haruka Shimotsuki. After further research, while Haruka Shimotsuki does not have much involvement in many anime OP/ED songs, she’s pretty active in gaming genre. Many of her songs can be heard in games such as  Ar Tonelico I and II and earlier Atelier series such as Atelier Iris. In term of anime series, she’s known for singing ending themes to the first two seasons of Rozen Maiden as part of a band called Kukui.

Rie Murakawa, who voices Escha Malier, is known for her roles in Hotaru Ichijou in Non Non Biyori and Aoi Futaba in Vividred Operation. THe other protagonist, Logix Fiscario or Logy, is voiced by Kaito Ishikawa who also voices characters in recent anime series such as Tsumugu Kihara in Nagi no Asukara, Tobio Kageyama in Haikyuu!!, Ledo in Suisei no Gargantia and Mitsuo in Golden Time. Ishikawa did a great job on voicing those characters. Another notable seiyuu in this series is Ami Koshimizu who voices as Linca, a supporting character. Ami Koshimizu also voiced other well known characters such as Kallen in Code Geass, Yayoi in iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia and Holo in Spice Wolf. And guess what ? she will voice the upcoming new Sailor Moon series as Sailor Jupiter.

Unlike other spring series such as Mahouka, Black Bullet and Sidonia no Kishi, Atelier Escha & Logy has a rather weak plot. In general, Atelier games that I played before, the story line involves a main protagonist and she/he has some tasks that he/she needs to finish with certain period. Based on first three episodes so far, Atelier Escha and Logy appears to follow the same plot/story line. For a 12-episodes anime series, the pace is really slow and the first three episodes are essentially like completely a quest entry in the game. In addition, Atelier Escha & Logy or any other Atelier series games has a lot of supporting characters. 12 episodes are pretty short to have any kind relationship/interaction between the main protagonists and the supporting characters. Just a little trivia, when you watch the first episode, the opening theme starts with “A15” and it means that Atelier Escha and Logy is the 15th Atelier series ever released.
