Magic is a product of neither fairy tale nor legends but it becomes technology since age of unknown to many people. People dated first record as far as 1999 AD. Through the passage of time and many researches influenced by Eastern and Western countries, public has made well-known existence of magic. Even though it has becomes more well-known, not everyone can use magic and only talented ones or ones, blessed high aptitude, can use magic.
In year 2030, drastic climate cooling began which caused the food supply dwindled. Energy source were often fought over and in 2045, World War Three broke out and it lasted for 20 years. Because of the war, world population plummeted to 3 billions. The fact that this conflict didn’t escalate to a thermonuclear war, it was due to global solidarity of the world’s magic technicians.
At the end of 21st century, year 2095, magic is essential become part of your life and public considers magic as a technical skill. Under these circumstances, every nation is competing to develop magicians. There are nine magic high schools throughout Japan. First high school is one of the top magic high school and is affiliated with National University of Magic. It’s a top magic school which is known to send talented magicians to National University of Magic. At the same time, it’s also an élite magic school which is known to produce excellent magician. In term of magic education, there’s no official regulation about providing equal opportunity for everyone and it’s almost purely talented driven. It basically means that if you’re a talented magician, your future will be bright. On the other hand, if you’re just a so-so magician, you can only get so far using your so-so talent.
In First high school, at the start of enrolment, it’s already been divided into “Bloom” and “Weed” group of students which create friction between the two and racism is unavoidable. The proper term of those two groups are Course 1 and Course 2 students. Mahouka tells you a story about sibling of brother and sister, a good for nothing big brother and a genius and talented little sister. In this élite high school, it puts more emphasize on practical skills instead of knowledge. Tatsuya Shiba and Miyuki Shiba are the name of our main protagonists in this anime series. Despite of being a sibling, occasionally, they show some affections towards each other in a way that others may misunderstand them for being a lover. A very thin line separates Tatsuya and Miyuki from being a lover and a sibling. They both have such a ridiculous bro/sis complex.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School) is based on a best-selling Japanese light novel with the same title. It’s written by Tsutomu Sato and published by ASCII Media Works. There are now 13 volumes in total and latest volume was recently released earlier this month on April 10th, 2014. The anime series will run for 26 episodes and I’m predicting that it will cover at the first four volumes which are Admission Arc 1 and 2 and Nine Schools Competition Arc 1 and 2.
The opening theme is “Rising Hope” by LiSA whose name is very familiar as she sung few singles for OP and ED. Two of them are from two of my very favourite anime: Oath Sign – Fate Zero and Crossing Field – Sword Art Online. I gave two thumbs up for the OP song. The ending theme is “Millenario” by Elisa whose name I haven’t heard for a while until lat year. For those Railgun fans, you should remember her from ED theme of To Aru Kagaku no Railgun called “Dear My Friends” and last year she released singles for ED theme of Valvrave no Liberator: “I’m by Your Side” and “Realism”.
In term of seiyuu casts, this series is just loaded with start seiyuus. Miyuki Shiba is voiced by Saori Hayami who’s known for her main roles as Musubi in Sekirei, Ikaros in Sora no Otoshimono, Ayase in Oreimo and many others. Her brother, Tatsuya Shiba is voiced by Yuuichi Nakamura who’s known for his main roles as Alto in Macross Frontier, Tomoya in Clanna and Kyousuke in Oreimo. Since Saori and Yuuichi are both in Oreimo, can we expect some wincest ? I’ve rooted for Ayase and Kyousuke ending ^^. Other supporting characters such as Sayaka Mibu (Haruka Tomatsu), Mayumi Saegusa (Kana Hanazawa) and Mari Watanabe (Maria Inoue) are also voiced by known seiyuus that we’re all familiar with their work.
I watched the first three episodes and really enjoyed every episode. I found myself re-watching them for a second time before writing this blog post. Tatsuya and Miyuki’s relationship I believe is far more than just a normal sibling and very close to a being lover. They both are very worried about each other well-being or sometimes too worried as others may see it. Tatsuya is a very mysterious person as you may notice and there’s something about him that we don’t know yet or something happened in the past. He’s being overly cautious against everyone and is worried that someone may find out the truth about him, whatever it is. While he looks weak and is just a course 2 student ie. Weed, I feel like he’s hiding his true ability. On the other hand, Miyuki idolizes her older brother and has truly brother complex (bro-com). In addition to idolizing her brother, she can also be a jealous type and she is a type of person that you never want to piss her off. Otherwise, she will freeze you and turn you into an ice coffin. This heavy bro-com from her is I found surprisingly entertaining and it’s what this series stands out among other others in this spring anime 2014 season.
Not to mention Tatsuya, being an underdog he is in practical magic, can hold his own against others and underdog story is something I really like. It does worry a bit that Tatsuya will pretty much OP everyone and no one can beat him in a way that any fights are just plain imbalance; let’s hope that will not happen. Between course 1 and course 2 students drama and discrimination, magic actions and underdog, this series shows a lot of promises and has a lot to offer in future episodes.
I highly recommend you include this anime series in your watch list this season if you haven’t already. And if you watched the first few episodes, what do you think about this series ?
